William M. Bennett, MD, FASN, Past President
William M. Bennett, MD, FASN, is Medical Director of Transplantation and the Director of Renal Research at Legacy Health Systems in Portland, Oregon. With more than 40 years of experience, Dr. Bennett is an expert in kidney transplantation.
Dr. Bennett received his medical degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, and was inducted into the national medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha. Following his residency in internal medicine at Northwestern University, he served as Chief Resident of Internal Medicine at the University of Oregon Medical School. Dr. Bennett then completed a fellowship in nephrology at Massachusetts General Hospital, in Boston. He retired as a Professor at Oregon Health & Sciences University in 1999 and is the current Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
Dr. Bennett is an active clinician, researcher and educator. He is Board Certified and recertified in internal medicine, nephrology, and clinical pharmacology, and he is also considered a specialist in clinical hypertension. He has been the principal investigator for multiple clinical studies, has more than 495 peer-reviewed publications to his credit, and he has contributed to 180 books and chapters. Dr. Bennett is a Master of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology and served as president of the organization from 1998–1999. He is also a fellow of the American Society of Transplantation.
Dr. Bennett has been honored for his contributions to the medical profession over the course of his career. He has been awarded the American Society of Nephrology’s Belding H. Scribner Award, the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation’s Jared J. Grantham Distinguished Achievement Award, the Kidney Association of Oregon’s first Gift of Life Award, the Medical Research Foundation of Oregon’s Discovery Award and Prize, the American Association of Kidney Patients’ Medal of Excellence Award for commitment to patient care, the National Kidney Foundation’s Donald W. Seldin Award for excellence in clinical nephrology, and he was selected as Northwestern University Medical School’s Alumnus of the Year. He has been identified as a nationally ranked top physician by Portland’s Top Doctors, America’s Top Doctors, and Best Doctors in America.
