AKI in the Setting of Heart Failure: Finding Ways to Make Both Organs Happy

November 19, 2016 | 04:30 PM - 06:30 PM

Location: W192

Session Description

Cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) developing in the setting of acute decompensated heart failure is a challenge for clinicians. Acute right and left heart failure is associated with AKI. Therapy can often be difficult, with diuretic resistance, worsening AKI, and electrolyte and acid-base disturbances developing. The best approach to these issues is not clear, and several approaches have been utilized. This session explores these various issues.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. recognize that AKI develops in the setting of both right and left heart failure; 2. describe the appropriate approach to diuretic resistance in CRS; 3. discuss options available to treat refractory hypervolemia with CRS; and 4. explain that a rising serum creatinine during therapy of CRS may be beneficial.
