Times They Are a-Changin': Hope for Steroid-Dependent Children?

November 19, 2016 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: W176

Session Description

Independent of the underlying renal pathology, steroids continue to be the cornerstone treatment of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome in children and young adults. Repeated high-dose corticosteroid therapy in relapses results in unacceptable cumulative toxicity. The discovery that immune cells play a key role in the pathophysiology of the disease has opened the possibility of a specific and safer treatment for steroid-dependent or frequent relapsing nephrotic syndrome. This session addresses these topics.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. define the basis of cell immune response in idiopathic nephrotic syndrome; 2. discuss the efficacy and safety of new emerging B cell– targeted therapy for children with steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome; and 3. evaluate emerging therapies in the context of avoiding/limiting the use of steroids.

Session Acknowledgements
