Session Description

Magnesium ions are cofactors for many enzymes and play critical roles in regulating membrane excitability. Phosphate is important in the cellular energy chain, skeletal and extraskeletal mineralization, membrane biosynthesis, post-translational protein modification, and regulation of gene expression. This session focuses on several recent important developments in understanding magnesium and phosphate transport and how dysregulation of these processes cause diseases.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. describe recent developments on basic mechanism of magnesium and phosphate transport; and 2. explain how dysregulation of magnesium and phosphate transport causes diseases.
