Special Session

iPatient: Providing Kidney Care via Telehealth

November 18, 2016 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: W190B

Session Description

Telemedicine is a growing area of interest for policymakers, clinicians, and health care payers. These technologies could benefit nephrologists and patients at every stage of kidney disease. Increasingly, data from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, and other sources are available to assess the effect of telemedicine on patients and health systems. As the momentum in Washington grows, this session is well timed to examine the policy options, pros and cons, and implications of telemedicine and remote patient monitoring.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. describe the goals of telemedicine expansion, as well as policy levers to increase, monitor, approve, and reimburse telemedicine technologies and services; 2. articulate how patients with kidney diseases may benefit from telehealth and what the unique risks of telehealth may be for this population; 3. discuss how telehealth is currently being implemented in large integrated health care systems, as well as in the patients' home environments; 4. identify strategies and resources for implementing HIT-enabled CKD population management in clinical and research settings; and 5. describe common barriers to using HIT in CKD population management.

Session Acknowledgements
