Special Session

Alternative Payment Models: Creating a Post–Fee-for-Service World

November 19, 2016 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: W181

Session Description

The debate is over. For physician payment, fee-for-service (FFS) care is out, and value-based care is in. Congress has mandated that all physicians must transition into payment models that focus on value and quality as opposed to volume or see their reimbursement levels fade away. FFS will be replaced with Alternative Payment Models (APMs), and nephrologists must begin to envision how care will be delivered and quality ensured in this new payment world. This session aims to give a primer on the changes and what the specialty can do to prepare.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. articulate how the 2015 law passed by Congress will eliminate, over time, Medicare FFS; 2. describe what the law outlines as the forthcoming transitions, with the accompanying replacement care delivery and payment models; 3. assess the status of an APM specific to kidney care with accompanying potential policy changes; 4. outline a conceptual “nephrologist as captain” model for a comprehensive CKD care APM; and 5. review how other countries have adopted dialysis payment models to fit their needs.
