Session Description

This session explores new data regarding dietary acid load, sodium intake, and phosphate intake in CKD patients. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering the addition of phosphate on food labels. This session explores the benefits and hurdles of this decision for CKD patients.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. examine the current evidence of health risks of high phosphorus intake from natural and added sources in both CKD and healthy individuals without impaired kidney function; 2. review the types of phosphorus commonly added in food processing, their extent of use, and physiological differences between natural and added phosphorus; 3. describe new data linking dietary potassium with health outcomes in CKD; and 4. review new data on dietary acid load and CKD progression.
