Session Description

WNK kinases phosphorylate and activate intermediate kinases ORS1 and SPAK to regulate members of SLC12 family transporters. Recent human genetic studies reveal that the KLHL3-Cullin3 E3 ligase acts upstream to regulate the abundance of WNK kinases. This session highlights several recent studies providing fresh insights to the regulation of Na and K transport by the WNK kinase pathway.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. describe the role of calcium-binding protein 39 (Cab39) and aspartyl aminopeptidase (DNPEP) in the WNK kinase pathway; 2. provide fresh insights to the regulation of NaCl transport by the WNK pathway; and 3. explain the fly renal tubule as a powerful genetic system to study WNK regulation of transport.
