Basic/Clinical Science Session

Kidney in Depth: Inner Medulla and Vasa Recta

November 19, 2016 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: W175

Session Description

The inner medulla of the kidney contains thin descending and ascending limbs of Henle's loop, inner medullary collecting ducts, and vasa recta, which together play an important role in water and urea, as well as Na, transport. The function and architecture of this region of the kidney are relatively less well understood. This session discusses several interesting topics in the field.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. review current knowledge and new insights to inner medulla and vasa recta structure and function; and 2. discuss recent developments in urea transport and urea transporters as targets of treatment for edema and hyponatremia disorders.

Session Acknowledgements

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, ASN thanks former ASN Councilors Tomas Berl, MD, FASN, and Maurice B. Burg, MD.
