Clinical Practice Session

Vexing Problems in Dialysis Patients

November 19, 2016 | 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Location: W185

Session Description

Calcific uremic arteriolopathy (CUA) remains a very difficult and devastating problem in dialysis patients. Multiple recent approaches for diagnosis and treatment have emerged. The long-term effect of parathyroidectomy for severe secondary hyperparathyroidism is unclear and even conflicting. Chronic hypotension in dialysis patients remains very frustrating and challenging to manage. Finally, the care of patients who exhibit disruptive behavior on dialysis is extremely challenging and requires certain skills and a team effort. This session addresses these topics.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. review recent advances in the management and treatment of CUA; 2. analyze recent published data on parathyroidectomy in dialysis patients; 3. discuss the pathophysiology and management of ESRD patients with chronic hypotension; and 4. explain how to approach patients with disruptive behavior on dialysis.

Session Acknowledgements
