Session Description

Cells use an exquisite mechanism to maintain the integrity and functionality of protein components. These mechanisms regulate protein synthesis, folding, and degradation. Dysregulation of this system in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is deleterious to cell function and viability and is implicated in the pathophysiology of CKD in a number of different contexts. Restoration of normal proteostasis by regulation of ER unfolded protein response holds promise for protection of the kidney. This session focuses on the mechanisms and the pathophysiology of proteostasis in kidney damage.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. describe the biology of ER stress signal and unfolded protein response; and 2. explain the pathophysiology of ER stress in kidney diseases.
