Basic/Clinical Science Session

Marching Forward with New Treatments for Old Ailments

November 18, 2016 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: W185

Session Description

There have been few therapeutic advances that have had a significant impact on the well-being of ESRD patients undergoing maintenance dialysis. Some progress has been made with the development of novel agents for known therapeutic targets to ameliorate the consequences of uremia. The greatest focus, however, has been in improving understanding of how to better apply the long-known therapeutic armamentarium to improve the well-being of patients undergoing dialysis. This session addresses these topics.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. examine the body of data on the safety and efficacy of oral drugs with a novel therapeutic target, in development for the treatment of anemia with ESRD; 2. discuss the dialyzability of drugs to improve the management of hypertension in ESRD patients; 3. recognize the work on the safety and efficacy of mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists in ESRD; and 4. describe the work on novel agents that inhibit Na-Pi and NHe to reduce systemic phosphorus absorption.
