Basic/Clinical Science Session

Take the Urea out of Uremia

November 18, 2016 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: W190A

Session Description

Despite more than five decades of RRT, our understanding of the uremic state and, hence, interventions to ameliorate risk is rudimentary. A better understanding of the multidimensional consequences of uremia helps develop novel therapeutic targets and/or a better understanding of risk associated with uremia. This session addresses these topics.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. recognize the structural and hemodynamic changes in the aorta and its health consequences in ESRD patients; 2. summarize our current understanding of the health consequences of protein-bound uremic retention solutes; 3. identify the importance of mitochondrial dysfunction in functional decline with kidney diseases; and 4. recognize the importance of Sulphur compounds as uremic toxins with significant health consequences in ESRD.

Session Acknowledgements

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, ASN thanks former ASN Councilors Carl W. Gottschalk, MD, and Thomas H. Hostetter, MD.
