Breaking the Cycle: New Approaches to Treating Resistant Hypertension

November 19, 2016 | 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Location: W184

Session Description

Medications remain the mainstay of hypertension management. Yet, a significant minority of patients have hypertension that is resistant to conventional approaches. Alternative approaches, some high tech, others novel low tech, may help to break the cycle of resistant hypertension. This session reviews the latest viable technological advances for BP control—baroreceptor stimulation and arteriovenous anastomosis creation, as well as new understandings of salt-sensitive hypertension and chronology of drug dosing.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. describe the data for chronotherapy and effects of timing of BP medication dosing on cardiovascular outcomes; 2. summarize the effectiveness of baroreceptor stimulation for treatment of resistant hypertension; 3. explain the mechanism by which central arteriovenous anastomosis may be an effective treatment; and 4. discuss mechanisms of body tissue sodium content mediating salt-sensitive hypertension.
