Golden Nuggets: Role of Exosomes and Microvesicles in Kidney Diseases

November 17, 2016 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: W190A

Session Description

“Extracellular vesicles from the urine and circulation have gained significant interest as potential diagnostic biomarkers in renal diseases. In addition to their diagnostic role as markers of kidney and vascular damage, extracellular vesicles may have functional significance by facilitating communication between cells and protecting against kidney injury.” (Erdbrugger JASN 2015). This session explores the potential clinical significance of exosomes and microvesicles in kidney diseases.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. explain from where exosomes and microvesicles originate under normal and pathologic conditions; 2. discuss the potential therapeutic role of microvesicles in AKI; and 3. describe the role of exosomes in tumor metastasis.
