Basic/Clinical Science Session

Peritoneal Dialysis and a Scarred Belly

November 17, 2016 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: W184

Session Description

An important threat to long-term success with PD is the development of peritoneal fibrosis and its associated changes in ultrafiltration capacity. The effect can potentially be modified by use of solutions other than conventional dextrose-based solutions. The extreme manifestation of peritoneal fibrosis is encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis, and there is interest in understanding if at-risk individuals can be identified early for intervention.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. describe advances in understanding of pathophysiology of peritoneal fibrosis and recent work on lineage tracing for source of fibroblasts; 2. discuss recent advances in understanding of changes in peritoneal water transport with peritoneal fibrosis; 3. summarize effects of use of solutions other than conventional dextrose-based formulations; and 4. discuss progress in identifying individuals at risk for progression to encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis.
