Basic/Clinical Science Session

HELPful Insights into Preeclampsia

November 20, 2016 | 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Location: W179

Session Description

Recent advances have elucidated molecular mechanisms that can modulate placental function in preeclampsia. Pregnancy-induced hypertension is exacerbated by interactions between circulating cells and the ischemic placenta, culminating in enhanced sodium retention in the kidney. Altered immune responses in preeclampsia may help to explain the increasingly recognized risk of pregnancy-induced hypertension in kidney transplant recipients. This session addresses these topics.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. describe molecular mechanisms underpinning the pathogenesis of preeclampsia; 2. discuss complications of pregnancy-induced hypertension in the mother and fetus; and 3. recognize clinical problems unique to kidney transplant recipients with pregnancy-induced hypertension.

Session Acknowledgements

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, ASN thanks former ASN Councilor Thomas F. Ferris, MD.
