Educational Symposium

Hepatitis C Virus Infection and Patients with Kidney Disease

November 17, 2016 | 12:45 PM - 01:45 PM

Location: S100B-C (McCormick Place)

Session Description

The prevalence of hepatitis C in patients with CKD is substantially higher than the general population and can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Treatment of hepatitis C may improve outcomes in some patients, particularly when trying to eradicate the virus preceding or after kidney transplantation. However, treatment with established agents can worsen conditions from which patients already suffer, such as anemia, flu-like symptoms, and depression. Newer direct-acting antiviral agents hold promise for patients with CKD given preliminary data about their improved side effect and safety profile in the patient population.

This symposium discusses the outcomes and appropriate use of therapy for patients with CKD, ESRD, or a kidney allograft, and hepatitis C. This symposium also addresses the newest data regarding appropriate use of antiviral agents.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this symposium, the participant will be able to: 1. describe current therapies and cure rates for treatment of hepatitis C in patients with CKD; 2. review the impact of hepatitis C virus infection on the outcomes of patients with CKD and ESRD; and 3. discuss the newest antiviral agents and the potential for cure, focusing on patients with CKD.
