Nephrology Training: Residents

Dear Junior Colleagues,

We are pleased that you are thinking about a career in the field of nephrology. We know that it is difficult to choose the right medical career and that you often have not had the opportunity to know exactly what the options are in any given field.

There are many career options in the field of nephrology, from pursuing basic science research almost exclusively to taking care of patients full-time; from spending your time mainly in a hospital setting to spending your time in your own private practice outside of the hospital.

We have asked some of our nephrology colleagues to write about their specific careers in hopes that this will give you some idea of the options available to you in our field.

Naturally, we think that pursuing a career in nephrology is rewarding, both intellectually and personally, and we hope this information will be helpful to you in your planning.

Sincerely,

Mark Parker, MD
Chair, American Society of Nephrology Workforce Committee
