Touring San Francisco

San Francisco

San Francisco is one of the world's greatest cities. East meets West in the City by the Bay, which boasts tantalizing restaurants, unique neighborhoods, and sights and sounds that can't be found anywhere else. Visit the Victorian houses on fashionable Union Street, recall the 1960s in Haight-Ashbury, enjoy a meal in Chinatown, or linger over pasta and espresso in one of the trattorias of North Beach. Take a side trip to Napa Valley, Sausalito, Tiburon, or the Muir Woods. Whatever you choose to see and do, San Francisco is everyone's favorite!

The Palace Hotel is the location for the ASN BRCU. This historic landmark provides the atmosphere and quality service you would expect from an elegant city hotel. Its central location is just steps away from Union Square, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), and the cable cars. The Palace is the perfect base for all your extracurricular adventures.

The ASN BRCU concludes at the start of the Labor Day weekend, which means participants can plan a holiday vacation in the Bay Area and still have plenty of time to study for the November ABIM examinations. Once in town, visit the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau Visitor Information Center at 900 Market Street or call them in advance at 415-391-2000 for daily reports on special events and activities.

Tours

BRCU participants are invited to take advantage of special tours designed by Galavents of California. Tour options include a San Francisco City Tour and a Tour of Muir Woods and Sausalito. Download the Tour Registration Form.

A Day in Muir Woods and Sausalito

The ride to Muir Woods will take you over the Golden Gate Bridge to your first stop, Sausalito, a picturesque old fishing village and artist’s colony. Next, you will drive to the cool green 500 acre Sequoia grove, named for the naturalist, John Muir.

Muir Woods is the only old-growth coastal redwood forest in the Bay Area and one of the last on the planet. It is estimated that nearly 2 million acres of forest just like Muir Woods once covered a narrow strip along the coasts of California and Oregon. Today, 97% of this has been impaired or altered. The park offers solitude, interpretive displays and programs, and numerous hiking trails. Come stroll through 1000 year old giant trees towering 260 feet high.
