Student Scholar Grant

Next Application Deadline:

Friday, October 2, 2009 (for funding to start between January 1 and May 31 of next calendar year)*

Friday, March 5, 2010 (for funding to start between June 1 and November 30 of same calendar year)*

Purpose

To enable selected medical students with an interest in either basic or clinical research to spend from 10-52 weeks engaged in continuous full-time research. The mentor must be an ASN member and must submit a program of study for the applicant. An award period can be a summer, semester, academic year, or any other 10-52 period of continuous full-time research.

Eligibility

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a US medical school and in good standing. Applicants already receiving other sources of stipend support are not eligible.

Program

Applicants will work under one PI for a single continuous 10-52 week full-time elective period. Extended support beyond 12 weeks will require evidence of productivity from the sponsor and student.

Use of Grant Funds

Salary: Stipend of $400/wk.

Supplies: $100/wk provided to the PI's lab to cover expenses.

Travel: Up to $1,500 to attend the ASN meeting following the research period.

Evaluation and Conditions of Appointment Selection

Student Scholar Grants are awarded on the basis of the applicant's ability and promise for a research career as a physician-scientist and the quality of the training that will be provided. The applicant's ability and promise are assessed on the basis of letters of reference, the proposed research plan, and medical school transcripts. The quality of the experience is evaluated based on the research plan as well as information provided in the mentor's endorsement, including the mentor's CV, a list of current funding, a list of trainees, and a statement of plans for training the applicant.

Appointment of the Student Scholar Grant is contingent on satisfactory completion of the academic year in which the application was submitted. After an award has been made, a change of sponsoring institution or primary mentor, or a major change in the research plan, requires prior approval for continuation of the SSG. Students are expected to conduct research according to the highest scientific and ethical standards and in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies regarding protection of human research subjects, humane care and use of laboratory animals, and laboratory safety. Students are responsible for the conduct of research and the preparation of research results for publication within the established guidelines of their institution. The ASN assumes no responsibility for an awardee's research findings or their interpretation.

Application

Only online applications will be accepted.

Grants Review Committee

Applications will be reviewed by a committee designated by the American Society of Nephrology. The Review Committee will consider the applicant's general qualifications, prior training, independence, and promise for continued productivity. In addition, attention will be given to the quality and originality of the applicant's previous research and the scientific merit of the research proposed in the application.
