M. James Scherbenske Grant
Quarterly Application Deadline: Sunday, June 15, 2008*, Friday, November 14, 2008, and Friday, March 13, 2009*
Purpose
To provide bridge funding for investigators from RO1 to RO1 whose application was not funded.
Eligibility
Applicant must have submitted a competitive renewal R01 application that was not funded. Cannot have more than $140,000 of total extramural research funding (direct costs) as a PI, co-PI, and/or collaborating investigator with paid % effort. Applicant must be an active member of the ASN and hold an MD or PhD or equivalent degree. The applicant's membership must be current with dues fully paid no later than February 1st of the calendar year in which the application is submitted. Appointment to full-time faculty must be confirmed in writing by the Department Chair, indicating the date of first full-time faculty appointment, and providing assurance that the department will provide needed resources for conducting independent research (laboratory and office space, salary support, and protected research time of at least 75%). Additionally, applicants will be considered ineligible should they submit more than one ASN grant application during any particular grants cycle.
Grant Amount
The award will provide $100,000 for 1 year and will cover salaries/supplies related to the candidate's research proposal. A maximum of 10% ($10,000) may be used to cover indirect costs at the candidate's sponsoring institution.
Use of Grant Funds
Salary/Fringe: Up to $70,000 can be used for the PI's salary/fringe, provided this amount in combination with other extramural funding does not exceed 80% of their total salary/fringe for MDs. There is no % restriction of PhDs.
Supplies: Any or all of the funds can be used for research supplies or support salary of research assistant.
Equipment: Funds cannot be used to purchase equipment that costs more than $5,000, unless such purchase is clearly justified in the research plan and approved by the ASN.
Restrictions: Funds cannot be used for travel, or for clinical or administrative time.
Application
Three deadlines have been established to correspond with the NIH grant review cycle.
Applicants should submit four copies of the following:
- Grant application form
- NIH summary sheet
And one copy of the following:
- NIH grant proposal
Please note the following in regards to the application:
- There are no font or margin specifications.
- You do not need to include a proposed budget with your application.
Grants Review Criteria
Grants will be assessed for likelihood of funding of an amended application by NIH.
