ASN-ASP-NIA Junior Development Grant in Geriatric Nephrology

The ASN supports developing academic subspecialists interested in careers focused on the geriatric and gerontology aspects of nephrology during the early years of a first faculty appointment. This award will supplement an award by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), using the R03 mechanism under the funding announcement titled Grants for Early Medical and Surgical Subspecialists’ Transitions to Aging Research (GEMSSTAR).

Purpose

The GEMSSTAR program provides two years of support for small research projects to allow early career physicians trained in medical and surgical subspecialties to establish a research track record in geriatric aspects of their subspecialty. The award will provide an opportunity to gain skills and experience in aging research and help the investigators establish an independent program of research in this field.

Applicants to the ASN-ASP-NIA Junior Development Grant in Geriatric Nephrology must first apply for the GEMSSTAR award through the NIA. The GEMSSTAR application closes on Monday, October 3, 2011.

Applications for the ASN-ASP-NIA Junior Development Grant in Geriatric Nephrology will open in early December and close on Friday, January 27, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. EST.

Grant Amount

The award will provide $25,000 annually for two years, beginning July 1, and can support the salary of the awardee and/or the purchase of supplies, the salaries of technical personnel, and other resources necessary for the completion of the research project. The funding cannot be used for indirect costs or the costs of administrative or clerical support.

In addition, the ASP will provide the award recipient $2,500 to be allocated for travel grants which must be used to attend the meetings of the American Geriatrics Society in years one and two of the award, and Renal Week in year two of the award.

Previous or Current Funding Allowed

Total grant funding, including the ASN-ASP career development grant and NIA grant, cannot exceed $250,000 in annual direct costs. The amount of the ASN grant will be reduced as appropriate if total funding exceeds this amount at any time during the funding period of the grant.

Post-Award Requirements

A progress report is required for non-competitive renewal of the grant for the second year. A final report is also required at the end of the funding period. The award is for continuous support, and interruptions in the period of support will require prior written approval from ASN.

Progress reports should include the following: Summary of progress during tenure of the ASN award, publications during the tenure of the award, an updated listing of current and pending grant support from all sources, and plans for continuing the research project in the next year.

Additional Requirements

Research Scholars are required to devote at least 75% of their time to research.

Grant recipients are expected to attend the annual meeting of the American Geriatrics Society in years one and two of the award, and the annual meeting of the American Society of Nephrology in year two of the award.

Researchers shall acknowledge ASN's support in publications resulting from their proposed work.

The grant may be transferred from one institution to another only with the prior approval of ASN. ASN must receive written assurance from the Department Head/Division Director of the new institution that the investigator at the time of or before the invitation will be permitted to devote at least 75% of his or her time to research, have a full-time faculty appointment, and that appropriate research facilities will be available.
