ASN-ASP Junior Development Grant in Geriatric Nephrology

Next Application Deadline: Friday, January 29, 2010*

Please note: Applicants applying for either the AKF-ASN, Gottschalk Grant, or Siegel Grant will be automatically considered for any of the three awards. There is no need to send in separate applications.

Sponsors

The Association of Specialty Professors (ASP) and ASN.

Purpose

The ASN supports developing academic subspecialists interested in careers focused on the geriatric and gerontologic aspects of nephrology during the early years of a first faculty appointment.

Eligibility

An applicant must be an active member of the ASN. At the time of submission the applicant's membership must be current and their dues paid. Appointment to full-time faculty must be confirmed in writing by the Department Chair, indicating the date of first full-time faculty appointment, and providing assurance that the department will provide needed resources for conducting independent research (research and office space, salary support, and protected research time of at least 75%). Candidates must have completed a subspecialty internal medicine fellowship leading to certification in Nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and be within the first four years of initial faculty appointment. Additionally, applicants will be considered ineligible should they submit more than one type of ASN grant application during any particular grants cycle. The applicant should also be a US citizen or be eligible for US permanent resident status. ASN career development grants are not renewable and previous recipients are not eligible for a second grant.

Grant Amount

The award will provide $75,000 annually for two years, beginning July 1, and can support the salary of the awardee and/or the purchase of supplies, the salaries of technical personnel, and other resources necessary for the completion of the research project. The funding cannot be used for indirect costs or the costs of administrative or clerical support.

In addition, the ASP will provide the award recipient $3,000 to be allocated for travel grants which must be used to attend the meetings of the American Geriatrics Society in years one and two of the award, and Renal Week in year two of the award.

Previous or Current Funding Allowed

Applicants are allowed to have currently, or have had previously, extramural (NIH or Foundation) mentored career development grant funding (e.g., NIH K08). However, total grant funding including the ASN career development grant cannot exceed $250,000 in annual direct costs. The amount of the ASN grant will be reduced as appropriate if total funding exceeds this amount at any time during the funding period of the grant.

Terms

Grant recipients are required to devote at least 75% of their time to research.

Grant recipients are expected to attend the meetings of the American Geriatrics Society in years one and two of the award, and Renal Week in year two of the award.

A progress report is required for non-competitive renewal of the grant for the second year. A final report is also required at the end of the funding period. The award is for continuous support, and interruptions in the period of support will require prior written approval from the ASN. Progress reports should include the following: Summary of progress during tenure of the ASN award, publications during the tenure of the award, an updated listing of current and pending grant support from all sources, and plans for continuing the research project in the next year.

Application

Only online applications will be accepted. All parts of the application must be completed by Friday, January 29, 4:00 EST.

Please note: Applicant should allow enough time for all parts of the application to be completed. Letters of reference must be uploaded by the original author (not the applicant).

The required signature form must be emailed to grants@asn-online.org by Friday, January 29, 4:00 EST. Signatures will need to be collected from the applicant’s Department Chair and the Institution’s Fiscal Officer.

Please note the following in regards to the application:

  • The proposal should describe a basic, clinical, or health services research project focused on a geriatric aspect of nephrology.
  • The research proposal text should be in size 12 font.
  • The research proposal has a 10-page length limit including figures.
  • You do not need to include a proposed budget with your application.
  • The application must describe a career development plan focused on the geriatric aspects of nephrology.
  • The applicant must describe a mentoring team comprised, at minimum, of a geriatrician, a nephrologist, and one other member. The awardee's research mentor must be the leader of this team.
Evaluation Criteria

The Review Committee will consider the potential of the applicant and the proposed project for eventual funding by a NIH R01 grant or its equivalent. Assessment will include the qualifications of the applicant with respect to prior training, productivity, and independence, as well as the scientific merit of the proposed project. The institutional commitment to the development of the applicant as an independent investigator, and the career development and mentoring plan in geriatrics and nephrology will also be assessed.
