Member Services: Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS)
What is PQRS?
The Medicare, Medicaid, and SCHIP Act of 2007 (MMSEA), enacted on December 29, 2007, authorized the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to make Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) incentive payments to eligible professionals who satisfactorily reported quality measures data.
CMS has announced that beginning in 2015, PQRS will be both a payment incentive program and a penalty program for physicians and other eligible health professionals who receive Medicare payments. These incentives or penalties will be based on data reported from 2013.
For a more complete description of PQRS, you can access an article from Kidney News — Physician Quality Reporting System: Incentive Today, Gone Tomorrow. (September 2012, Vol. 4, Number 9).
Who is eligible?
Under PQRS, covered professional services are those paid under or based on the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS). To the extent that eligible professionals are providing services which get paid under or based on the PFS, those services are eligible for PQRS.
- Medicare physicians
