President's Message

Welcome to the May issue of Renal Express! There are several items of importance I'd like to discuss.
Firstly, I am pleased to announce that our Director of Postgraduate Education, Dr. Robert Narins, has generously agreed to continue to serve the ASN in this critically important post. Bob has initiated many important programs directed at improving communication and educational opportunities for ASN members. Examples include the enormously popular Board Review Course, NephSAP, edited by Dick Glassock, educational evening symposia available at Renal Week, and of course, the PGE programs that are available during the first two days of Renal Week. Bob has also recently initiated ASN's Regional Meetings to provide updates on important advances from the previous Renal Week. Regional Meetings were initially held in New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles and received high marks. For this reason, Bob will increase next year's Regional Meetings to include Dallas, Washington, DC, and the Seattle/Portland area. The Council and I are pleased Bob will remain on as Director, Postgraduate Education through 2007.
Secondly, I am proud to announce the winners of the ASN Awards for 2004. The Young Investigator Award will be presented to Dr. Jeffrey Miner of the Washington University of St. Louis. The Homer Smith Award will be presented to Dr. Thomas J. Jentsch of Hamburg University in Germany. The John P. Peters Award will be presented to Dr. Charles Carpenter of the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. The Belding Scribner Award will be presented to the worthy triumvirate, Friedrich (Fritz) Port, Philip Held, and Robert Wolfe of the University of Michigan. These awards coupled with this year's Plenary Speakers will help make the Renal Week 2004 one of our best! For more details about ASN's awards, click here.
Thirdly, in early June, we will mail the Preliminary Program for Renal Week 2004, containing registration, housing, and program information. Renal Week 2004 will be held at the America 's Center in St. Louis from October 27-November 1.
Finally, the ASN Council has plans to interact closely with the NIH to understand changes in research funding and priorities. As these develop, I will bring them to your attention in Renal Express.
Please feel free to email me your ideas on how we can better serve the needs of ASN members.
Sincerely yours,

William E. Mitch, MD
