Program Chair's Message

Dear ASN Members:
Welcome to the June issue of Renal Express! Dr. Mitch kindly asked me to write this month's message, so that I, as this year's meeting Program Chair, can share with you important details regarding ASN's Renal Week 2004, which will take place at the America's Center in St. Louis, Missouri from October 27-November 1.
In addition to the fascinating lectures being presented by this year's plenary speakers, Peter C. Agre, MD; Alfred Goldberg, PhD; Barbara Kahn, MD; and David Harrison, MD; and this year's award lectures by Thomas Jentsch, MD, PhD, winner of the Homer Smith Award and Jeffrey H. Miner, PhD, winner of the Young Investigator Award, there will also be a wide-range of topics presented through this year's Postgraduate Education Programs, Basic and Clinical Science Symposia, Clinical Nephrology Conferences (CNCs), and Evening Symposia. The topics are the collaborative work of the Program and Postgraduate Education Committees. The innovative, educational opportunities are just what you've come to expect of ASN's Renal Week™, a comprehensive program that "brings the world's best science together to address renal disease". Click here to learn more about this year's Renal Week™ program.
I'd also like to thank everyone who submitted abstracts for Renal Week™ 2004! We're happy to announce that we received well over 4,000 abstracts this year. You will be notified by August 19 regarding the status of your submitted abstract. Stay tuned to the ASN™ website in late September for ASN's online, searchable abstract program.
On behalf of the ASN, I'd like to encourage you to register and reserve your housing for Renal Week™ 2004. The Early Registration Deadline is Friday, September 10, 2004, and the Housing Reservation Deadline is Monday, September 27, 2004.
All of us at the ASN look forward to seeing you in St. Louis!

Notice of the Availability of Concept Development Administrative Supplements for the Kidney Disease Clinical Studies Initiative
In conjunction with the NIH, the ASN supported the development of a program to encourage the study of kidney disease, its complications and treatment in patients. This program is funded through The Concept Development Supplements. The goal is to provide support for planning and writing an investigator-initiated application for clinical studies in kidney disease. The usual supplement is $50,000 direct costs. The NIDDK website contains details here. We encourage a widerange of applications for studies and especially applications that will lead to RO1, R21, and R33 applications under $500,000 direct cost per year. Most importantly, approximately 10 of 25 to 30 requests for the $50,000 for writing and planning were funded last year. The next deadline is July 15, 2004, and we look forward to receiving your application.
