Dear ASN Members:
Welcome to the August issue of Renal Express! Dr. Berl kindly invited me to write this month's message, so that I, as this year's Program Chair for Renal Week 2005, can share with you important details regarding this year's meeting, which will take place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center from November 8-13.
In addition to fascinating plenary presentations by Avram Hershko, MD, PhD; Marc Feldmann, MD, PhD; Sir Ravinder Maini, MD; Walter Willett, MD, DrPH; and ASN member, Terry B. Strom, MD, there will be a wide-range of topics presented through this year's Postgraduate Education Programs, Basic and Clinical Science Symposia, Clinical Nephrology Conferences (CNCs), Free Communications, Poster Presentations, and Official Symposia. The topics are the collaborative work of the Program and Postgraduate Education Committees. The innovative, educational opportunities are just what you've come to expect of ASN's Renal Week, a comprehensive program where attendees share “advances in the basic and clinical science of renal disease.”
I'd like to draw your attention to a couple aspects of the meeting of which I'm especially proud, specifically the Free Communications sessions and nightly Basic Science sessions, taking place from Thursday-Saturday. We received our highest number of submitted abstracts at a record 4,400 submissions and are planning 52 Free Communications presentations, another all-time high. To accommodate the dramatic rise in Free Communications, all abstract presentations will last for a total of 10 minutes to allow for a wider variety of groundbreaking research. The Free Communications will cover a wide breadth of topics, from dialysis to technological advances, complications of ESRD, and many more. We are also thrilled to bring you a new Friday evening special, 4 free communication sessions, to expand on basic science abstract oral presentations. Attendees have the option of attending presentations on diabetes mellitus, glomerular biology, therapeutic targets in ARF, or osmoregulation and transport. The session will precede a group dinner bringing the basic science community together in an interactive forum with an invited speaker on a "hot topic!"
I also want to offer a special thank you to everyone who submitted abstracts for Renal Week 2005. You will be notified by the middle of August regarding the status of your submitted abstract. Stay tuned to the ASN website in late September for ASN's online, searchable abstract program.
On behalf of the ASN, I'd like to encourage you to register and reserve your housing for Renal Week 2005. The Early Registration Deadline is Monday, September 26, 2005, and the Housing Reservation Deadline is Friday, September 30, 2005. Click here to learn more about this year's Renal Week program.
See you in Philly!
Sincerely yours,
Mohamed H. Sayegh, MD, FASN
2005 Program Committee Chair
