1. October President's Message

Dear Members of the ASN:

As Renal Week is only a few weeks away, the ASN is buzzing with activity. Preparations for the multitude of educational events and scientific sessions are in full gear. The scheduling of meetings are all in place, despite the fact that Renal Week has an increasingly tight schedule from morning til night. I want to make you aware of the fact that we have added a special noon session on Saturday, November 12 that will focus on lessons learned by the renal community from Hurricane Katrina. I will moderate the session along with the presidents of the NKF and the RPA. The panel of speakers will include some individuals who were very much part of the rescue efforts, including representatives of dialysis providers and the Louisiana network, along with Dr. Barry Straube from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The renal community urgently needs to develop a disaster plan that will better protect our patients, and this session is the first step in that direction.

As I alluded to in my last message to you, the Society is embarking on a more robust effort in the public policy arena. The challenges that our profession faces as the NIH budget is becoming more limited, as well as the changes that loom on the horizon in the practice setting require the proactive approach of all renal societies. We are thus in the midst of a search for a Chair of a newly formed Public Policy Board. The importance that the Council places on this endeavor will be reflected in the revised mission statement that will be sent to the membership as part of the updates we have undertaken of the Society's bylaws. A statement noting that one our missions specifically includes advocacy on behalf of all aspects of our profession will now be included. These revised bylaws reflect more accurately the current operation of the ASN, and I trust that you will support them with your vote.

As my year as President of the Society is rapidly drawing to a close, this being my last message to you before Renal Week, I want to express to you my gratitude for placing your trust in me. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your President. I have maintained close contact and communication with the incoming president, Dr. Thomas DuBose, who will, I am sure, continue to lead the ASN with great distinction and total dedication next year.

I hope to see many of you in Philadelphia!

Sincerely yours,

Tomas Berl, MD
