1. October President's Message

Dear Colleagues:

This month, I wanted to provide you with some additional information about the exciting activities taking place at Renal Week, scheduled to occur November 14-19 in San Diego, California. The enthusiastic and innovative members of the 2006 Program Committee, under the direction of Lisa M. Guay-Woodford, MD, have developed an extraordinary meeting.

In response to a post-Renal Week survey of the ASN membership, the 2006 Program Committee has made further adjustments to increase the effectiveness of these sessions. This year, a number of abstracts will be presented in 51 Free Communications (FC) sessions. The time allotted for each presentation will be increased to 12 minutes: 7 minutes for the formal presentation and 5 minutes for questions. This revised format can accommodate more than 500 FCs and will encourage crisp presentation of the data, while enhancing the opportunity for thoughtful discussion.

I am also pleased to report that we have added a new programmatic innovation, Poster Discussion Sessions, to include 62 abstracts that were selected for presentations in 6 dynamic and interactive sessions. These Poster Discussion Sessions will present some of Renal Week's most exciting original science, by featuring senior investigators summarizing the key findings described in each selected abstract. The moderators will also lead an interactive discussion engaging the presenters, the senior investigators for each study, and the audience. All authors will take questions during these two-hour sessions. The posters presented in the Poster Discussion Sessions will be exhibited in designated rooms adjacent to the Exhibit Hall. In order to allow maximum viewing opportunities for the meeting participants, the ASN will also exhibit these posters in the appropriate standard Poster Session that will be held the following day.

Also new this year, the ASN is displaying select posters from NIH-funded multi-center clinical trials in our Exhibit Hall. These posters are intended to assist with the recruitment and enrollment of patients to the study. Visit the Exhibit Hall for additional details on these posters!

The program provides several special sessions, including a guest State-of-the-Art Lecture, which will be given by Elias A. Zerhouni, MD, Director, National Institutes of Health on Friday, November 17 from 10:15 am -11:45 am. The title of Dr. Zerhouni's session will be “Kidney Disease Research within the NIH Roadmap: Strategies for the Future.” Another interesting session will be the “President's Special Symposium: Disasters and Nephrology: Lessons from Katrina,” taking place on Sunday, November 19 from 10:00 am -12:00 pm. This session will serve to provide strategies for proactive responses to future disaster challenges.

Rudolph Jaenisch, MD, Professor of Biology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a State-of-the-Art lecturer at Renal Week, was recently honored by induction into The Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Jaenisch's presentation on Saturday morning at the annual meeting is entitled, “Stem Cells, Cloning, and Therapy: Promise, Problems, Reality.” This presentation promises to be one of the highlights of the program this year.

To learn more about the many exciting sessions taking place at Renal Week, please visit the ASN website at www.asn-online.org.

Sincerely yours,

Tom DuBose
