Dear Members of the ASN:
Welcome to the July issue of Renal Express!
As you know, we have been actively seeking outstanding candidates to fill key roles within the Society. I am pleased to announce that after a very intensive search, we have appointed: Paul L. Kimmel, MD, FACP, FASN, Director of Education; Eric G. Neilson, MD, FASN, Editor-in-Chief, JASN; and Stanley Goldfarb, MD, FACP, Editor-in-Chief, NephSAP.
Paul L. Kimmel, MD, FACP, FASN
Director of Education
The Director of Education plays an integral role in all educational programs of the ASN, which are central to the Society's core mission. On September 1, Dr. Paul Kimmel will succeed Dr. Robert Narins, who recently retired. Paul will be responsible for the design, oversight, and delivery of a wide array of educational programs, including the Annual Board Review Course & Update; Renal Week; and Renal WeekEnd meetings. He will also interact with members of other renal-related organizations and participate in educational publications co-sponsored by the ASN, such as UpToDate and HDCN. Additional responsibilities include interacting with corporate supporters to coordinate a variety of educational activities, development of new educational programs, and additional administrative responsibilities.
Paul currently serves as Associate Professor of Medicine and Director, Division of Renal Disease and Hypertension at George Washington University Medical Center, and enjoys a national reputation as a leading clinical investigator and educator. He is the author of more than 165 papers, review and invited articles, and chapters in scientific journals and textbooks. He has also received a number of teaching awards, including the 10th International Congress of Nephrology's Annual Teaching Award, and is in demand as a dynamic and informative speaker. Paul has served the ASN as Co-Chair of the Clinical Science Committee and Assistant Director, Postgraduate Education for Renal Week.
As the incoming Director of Education, Paul will maintain the high level of quality of our current educational efforts. He is committed to developing new and vibrant programs to serve the membership of the ASN and is already hard at work planning a number of exciting educational initiatives. He will interact closely with the editors of JASN, NephSAP, and CJASN to ensure that the educational programs and journals build upon one another to provide the most comprehensive learning tools available.
Eric G. Neilson, MD, FASN
Editor-in-Chief, Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN)
The Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN), established in 1990, publishes original articles of high quality that are relevant to the broad field of nephrology, and enjoys the highest impact factor of any journal in the field of renal-related research. Dr. Eric Neilson is a leading physician-scientist in the field of nephrology and will continue to advance the quality of this prestigious and premiere journal. As Editor-in-Chief, Eric, will be responsible for the format and content of the journal and serve as a key leader in the educational mission of the Society. He will succeed Dr. William G. Couser, whose term as Editor-in-Chief ends on June 30, 2007.
Eric is the Hugh Jackson Morgan Professor of Medicine and Cell and Developmental Biology at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Chairman of the Department of Medicine, and Physician-in-Chief at Vanderbilt University Hospital. He is a leading authority in the field of renal immunology and pathophysiological mechanisms of glomerulonephritis and an active teacher of clinical medicine, overseeing the training of 130 house officers and more than 235 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. He is the author of numerous articles in highly respected journals and texts and is a recipient of several ASN awards including, the Young Investigator Award, the Barry M. Brenner Lecture, the President's Medal, and most recently, the prestigious The John P. Peters Award. He is currently serving on the Public Policy Board of the ASN.
As the incoming Editor-in-Chief of JASN, Eric looks forward to implementing a number of improvements in JASN, such as format modifications designed to render JASN more user-friendly, and contemporary. In addition to revisions in article length and redaction of methods and additional data, he will also utilize extensive color graphics to enhance the presentation of editorials and mini-reviews. He also proposes including mini-reviews from Renal Week, which would reflect key presentations made during the annual meeting. He plans to review current procedures, to help acquaint the Editorial Board with the current operations and policies of JASN and enable a fresh look at past successes and future opportunities. Finally, Eric believes in the importance of continuing the adaptation of JASN into the electronic publishing era and increasing the impact of the journal, in terms of citations and national visibility. He will join the ASN as Editor-in-Chief of JASN on July 1, 2007, and is already well underway in the process of appointing his Associate Editors and Editorial Board.
Stanley Goldfarb, MD, FACP
Editor-in-Chief, Nephrology Self-Assessment Program (NephSAP)
The mission of the Nephrology Self-Assessment Program (NephSAP) is to regularly and continually provide a vehicle that is useful for clinical nephrologists who seek to renew and refresh their clinical knowledge and diagnostic and therapeutic skills. As Editor-in-Chief of NephSAP, Dr. Stanley Goldfarb will be responsible for selecting and evaluating editors and reviewers, ensuring timely and accurate delivery of the content of each issue, recommending improvements in editorial policies and procedures, ensuring fulfillment of NephSAP's educational mission, reporting to the ASN Publications Committee, and working collaboratively with the Society's staff and leadership.
He is currently Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Clinical Education at the University of Pennsylvania , School of Medicine. Stan comes to NephSAP, well-prepared with many years service with the ABIM, as Director of the Division of Nephrology and Chair of Medicine at University of Pennsylvania and as a leading authority in clinical nephrology and calcium homeostasis. He has received a variety of prestigious awards, including the Laureate Award from the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Internal Medicine. He has authored books, symposia, more than 150 articles, editorial reviews, chapters and letters, and edited 9 manuals. Stan has also spent considerable time over the past year to help develop the Renal Grand Rounds program for the ASN, as Assistant Director, Postgraduate Education for Renal Grand Rounds. He is currently an Associate Editor of NephSAP.
He envisions several changes to the Nephrology Self-Assessment Program, including improving the quality of self assessment questions, by more closely conforming to the practices of the ABIM. He also aspires to make NephSAP material timelier and to improve the quality and nature of the graphics. Stan will succeed Dr. Richard J. Glassock as Editor-in-Chief of NephSAP on July 1, 2007.
The Council of the ASN is extremely pleased with the prior success of our educational programs and these two outstanding journals. It is with considerable enthusiasm, as we look to the future, that these three key positions are to be filled by such outstanding and accomplished leaders in the field.
Sincerely yours,

Thomas D. DuBose, Jr., MD, FASN
