1. June President's Message

Dear ASN Members:

Welcome to the June issue of Renal Express!

In what has become an annual tradition for the ASN, Dr. Henrich has invited me, as the Program Chair, to write this month's message and provide an update regarding Renal Week 2007, which will take place at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California from October 31-November 5. The theme of this year's meeting is “The Kidney and its Diseases: Understanding Mechanisms, Discovering Treatments.”

This year's State-of-the-Art talks have been designed to appeal to the entire ASN membership, both basic and clinical scientists alike. At the opening Plenary Session on Friday, November 2, David Altshuler, MD, PhD, from the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard's Broad Institute will discuss the power of human genetics to identify the molecular basis and new treatment approaches for common diseases like diabetes. Saturday's speaker, Abraham Verghese, MD, MACP of the University of Texas Health Science Center will address the role of medical humanities in medical education and patient care. On Sunday, Roger Kornberg, PhD, Stanford University Medical School and the 2006 Nobel laureate in Chemistry, will present his work on the structural basis of eukaryotic gene transcription. Finally, Neil R. Powe, MD, MPH, MBA, FASN, of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine will give our closing Plenary Session lecture on Monday, November 5, on health disparities and the worldwide CKD epidemic.

Members of the Program Committee and the Postgraduate Education Committees have worked together to develop clinical and basic science symposia and clinical nephrology conferences, which address the critical scientific and clinical issues in kidney biology and disease investigation. Topics range from the genetic basis of common kidney disease pathogenesis to novel therapeutic approaches for kidney disease treatment to issues in clinical guideline development. Each day's program provides a number of choices designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of clinical and scientific interests.

We appreciate all the investigators who have submitted their work to this year's meeting. Year after year, the original science component of the program provides some of the most important and exciting content in the meeting. This year's Program Committee has continued efforts to promote scientific exchange by expanding the number of poster discussions and free communication sessions. Additionally, several plenary abstract sessions have been planned to highlight the important scientific advances in kidney biology and disease that have occurred within the last year. The Program Committee has also developed the “ASN Annual Meeting-Within a Meeting: Polycystic Kidney Disease,” in conjunction with the Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Foundation. This special meeting will encompass both CNCs and Basic and Clinical Science Symposia. Both symposia and free communication sessions that comprise the PKD Meeting-within-a-Meeting will occur in the same location at the Moscone Center.

The Preliminary Program, which will be mailed to ASN members and all Renal Week 2006 attendees in mid-June, will include information on scientific programming, registration, hotel reservations, travel, local San Francisco attractions, and more. The Program with complete and frequently updated information on the symposia and clinical nephrology conferences will also be posted on the ASN website at www.asn-online.org in June. In October, the ASN website will provide the abstract slate in an online searchable format.

I look forward to seeing you in San Francisco!

Sincerely yours,

John Sedor, MD

2. Call for Abstracts for Renal Week 2007

Don't forget that time is running out to submit your abstracts for Renal Week 2007. All abstracts must be submitted electronically through the ASN website by Wednesday, June 6, 2007, 11:59 pm Eastern Time at www.asn-online.org. Abstracts received after June 6 will not be accepted or reviewed. No exceptions will be made.

To submit an abstract, simply create a user name and password the first time you enter the abstract site. Please note: the abstract submission site is separate from the ASN website and JASN.org, so you need to create a user name and password specifically on this site. You may complete your abstract submission on your first visit or return to the site, by using the user name and password you previously created. Visit the ASN website at www.asn-online.org under Renal Reminders for information and to submit your abstract, or click here.

You will need your ASN Membership ID to submit your abstract for Renal Week. Please contact the ASN via email at email@asn-online.org or by telephone at 202-659-0599 if you need to obtain your membership number.

For technical assistance, please contact Marathon Multimedia directly during the abstract submission process, by telephone at 866-759-5440 (within the U.S. ) or 507-334-5212 or 31 229 211 980 (outside of the U.S. ). Or, you may email Marathon Multimedia at support@marathonmultimedia.com. Technical assistance is available 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Central Time USA, Monday - Friday.

We strongly suggest testing the system prior to June 6, so you are able to submit your abstract with ease.

Please contact the ASN by telephone at 202-659-0599 or by email at email@asn-online.org if you have additional questions.

3. ASN Announces Launch of New Association Management System

The American Society of Nephrology is pleased to announce that we will utilize a new association management system beginning in mid-June. This new, robust system will offer many features, including the ability to renew your dues, update your contact information, and purchase ASN materials directly online. To access these new features, which will be available at a later date, you will simply visit the ASN website at www.asn-online.org and enter your last name and ASN User ID, as you've done in the past. We feel confident the new system will simplify the way in which we communicate with our members.

Unfortunately, as with all new systems, it may take some time for the system to be fully functional, and you might experience a minor inconvenience during the conversion process. As we migrate over our data, there will be a brief time between June 6-14 that data cannot be updated. We ask for your patience during this time and look forward to continuing to improve our services to you.

As always, please let us know if you have any questions about the new system and processes. We can be contacted via email at pbeard@asn-online.org or by telephone at 202-659-0599.

4. 12th Annual Board Review Course and Update

Note: Stay tuned to the ASN website for housing and registration information.

Join the ASN August 25-31st, 2007 at The Palace Hotel in San Francisco for the ASN's Board Review Course & Update. The BRC is an intensive review and update for all and a must for Certification & Re-Certification. It has become a "Renal Rite of Passage" that can be customized to fit your specific needs. The timing of the ASN Board Review Course & Update in late August maximizes attendees' readiness for the November Nephrology Board certification and recertification examinations of the American Board of Internal Medicine. After completion of the course and the self-assessment test on September 1, participants have a full two months to fill in any gaps in their knowledge.

It's August, It's San Francisco, So it must be the ASN's Board Review Course!

Stay tuned to your mail and email boxes later this spring for additional information and registration forms.

5. ISN Nexus Symposium on Hypertension

The International Society of Nephrology (ISN) invites you to attend the second in the series of the ISN's new generation of symposia: Nexus - Linking Research to Practice.

Building on the success of the first Nexus on “The Bone and the Kidney” (October 12-15, 2006 in Copenhagen, Denmark), “Hypertension and the Kidney”, November 29 - December 2, 2007, Vienna, Austria, is set to convene and intermingle an eminent group of nephrologists, hypertensiologists, cardiologists and endocrinologists.
