1. August President's Message

Dear ASN Members,

The ASN recognizes the need to support the clinical and basic science research of its members, particularly as so many in our association confront the reality of decreased NIH funding. Over the years the ASN has consistently increased its grant funding, and this year is no exception. In this issue of Renal Express we are pleased to announce the applicants who have been offered the 2007 Gottschalk and Halpin awards.

I am also pleased to inform our membership that the ASN continues to strengthen our bond of community with SLANH (Latin American Society of Nephrology). For the last three years we have jointly sponsored a program that allows nephrologists from Central and South America to spend three weeks observing a training program at a US institution, followed by attendance at the ASN's Renal Week. In addition, the ASN also continues the SLANH travel grant program, which provides travel grants for 10 more SLANH fellows to attend Renal Week.

From our conversations with the fellows who were sponsored by the ASN/SLANH program it is clear that the experience has been exceptionally positive. Likewise, the hosting institutions have enjoyed having the enthusiastic young physicians in their midst. The ASN offers its congratulations to the eleven 2007 ASN/SLANH program recipients and extends its gratitude to the Training Program Directors and their institutions for helping to provide this opportunity.

Finally, online housing and registration for ASN's Renal Week are available via our website. Please visit us at www.asn-online.org in advance of the early attendee registration deadline of Monday, September 17, 2007 and the housing deadline of Friday, September 28, 2007.

Sincerely yours,

William Henrich, MD, FASN

4. Call for Informational Posters For Renal Week

The ASN program committee is again soliciting abstracts (300 words or less) that contain information about ongoing clinical trials or research services available in core facilities at academic institutions. These abstracts will be displayed during the ASN meeting poster sessions. Submitted abstracts should include a brief background; study goals, hypotheses or description of available core services; trial inclusion/exclusion recruitment criteria if appropriate; and funding agency. Preference will be given to studies and resources supported by federal and NGO agencies. Abstracts should be submitted to Karen Campbell, PhD, Executive Director at kcampbell@asn-online.org no later than Friday, August 31, 2007. These abstracts will be reviewed and a decision for inclusion made no later than September 28, 2007.

5. Renal Week Abstracts

Abstract Information

Thank you to all ASN members who submitted abstracts for Renal Week 2007. Once again this year, we have received a record number of abstracts.

In late August, all presenting authors will receive a letter regarding the status of their submitted abstracts. If you are a presenting author and do not receive a letter about the abstract by August 24, please send an email inquiry to support@marathonmultimedia.com or fax to (507) 334-0126.

Stay tuned to the ASN website in early October for ASN's Program-and-Abstracts Online, which will include the complete program and abstracts for Renal Week.

6. Renal Week 2007 Housing and Registration

Registration and housing for Renal Week 2007 are now available through the ASN website. Renal Week will take place from October 31-November 5, 2007 in San Francisco, California. Access to the registration and housing websites and additional information, including program details, is available here on the ASN website.

7. 12th Annual Board Review Course and Update

Join the ASN August 25-31, 2007 at The Palace Hotel in San Francisco for the ASN's Board Review Course & Update. The BRC is an intensive review and update for all and a must for certification & recertification. It has become a "Renal Rite of Passage" that can be customized to fit your specific needs. The timing of the ASN Board Review Course & Update in late August maximizes attendees' readiness for the November Nephrology Board Certification and Recertification Examinations of the American Board of Internal Medicine. After completion of the course and the self-assessment test on August 31, participants have nearly three full months to fill in any gaps in their knowledge.

If it's August, it's San Francisco and the ASN's Board Review Course!
