President's Message

Sharon Anderson

Dear Colleague:

Since its inception in 1966, the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) has committed its resources to advancing the education and careers of its members and promoting the best in kidney care worldwide. During the last decade, ASN has dedicated a widening array of resources to reaching the community through electronic venues. Electronic communications have helped the society become more responsive to member interests and provide essential information to ASN members and others in the kidney community.

The Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN) and the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN), once available only in print issues, now offer full-text online publication and publish articles ahead of print. CJASN online averages 50,000 unique visits a month from 35,000 visitors in 203 countries, and the JASN site averages 115,000 visits per month from 75,000 visitors in 212 countries. These numbers grow monthly and reflect the excellent work of study authors and the journal editorial teams, as well as underscore the commitment of ASN to disseminate advances in our field as rapidly and widely as possible.

The ASN website provides members and others in the kidney community a rapidly expanding set of resources, services, and information. This expansion is evidenced by the increase in visits to the ASN site (1.4 million in 2009, 997,000 in 2008 and 635,000 in 2007). In 2009, ASN published the first-ever online geriatric nephrology curriculum, initiated a Training Program Directors site designed to enhance the quality of medical education worldwide, expanded its policy and legislative action pages, launched a podcast program, completed the transition to fully electronic grant application processes, and developed the ASN Conflict of Interest Initiative, an important guide for all involved in kidney care.

In response to member interest, ASN plans to significantly expand its online educational offerings during the coming years. Last month, ASN released the first online version of the ASN Board Review Course & Update (BRCU). ASN will release the first online version of Renal WeekEnds later this year. The society will continue to build its programs across all communications venues to better serve kidney professionals worldwide.

This issue of Renal Express contains links to two important podcasts. One provides information about the Network of Minority Research Investigators Eighth Annual Workshop, and the second gives listeners an inside view of ASN Renal WeekEnds 2010. Renal Express also provides access to the latest information on the society's support of Haitian disaster relief.

Sincerely,

Sharon Anderson, MD, FASN

Other News

ANNA Elects New President

Rowena Elliott, MD, associate professor in the University of Southern Mississippi School of Nursing, has been elected national president-elect of the American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA). She will assume her new role in May at the organization's National Symposium in San Antonio. After one year as president-elect, Elliott will become national president for 2011-2012, followed by one year as immediate past-president (2012-13).

Her election as president-elect is particularly significant in that Elliott will become the first African-American to hold that position in the association's 41-year history. She currently serves on the ANNA Board of Directors as the national secretary.
