nephrology training
TPD Toolkit
The TPD Toolkit contains information provided by nephrology training programs on curricula, goals and objectives, evaluation tools, teaching tools and other items. The material was submitted by TPDs in response to a general solicitation to all nephrology training programs for information on these topics. All of the material was examined by one of several small groups and/or small group leaders that were present at the Nephrology TPD Retreat in May 2009. Material that was chosen for the website was felt to be of good quality, although it is not endorsed by the ASN or the TPDs as necessarily the best and/or only example(s). Material not chosen for distribution to all programs either contained personal information about specific fellows, was repetitive of other programs, or did not contain material deemed of sufficient interest or appropriateness for general distribution. Contributing programs can sometimes be identified, however no special efforts were made to indicate the author(s). The material was provided with the understanding that it would be freely available to all nephrology training programs to use as they wished.
This material represents first efforts at sharing resources in an attempt to help all nephrology TPDs. More material will be added as it becomes available, including contributions from individual programs as well as newly developed material. All TPDs are encouraged to submit material they feel will be of interest to the general TPD community. The material can be submitted with the stipulation that it be anonymous in order to alleviate any concerns over criticism of that specific program. The intent is to have all TPDs help one another in order to strengthen the quality of the training program and to make the TPD's life easier. To submit material that you wish to share with other TPDs, please email: donald.kohan@hsc.utah.edu.
Curriculum
Fellowship Guides
Each nephrology fellowship guide is different and each has much to offer as an example of how a nephrology fellowship program can be structured. Be sure to look carefully within each guide; there is a great deal of useful information.
Program Goals and Objectives/Matrices
Attached are examples of matrices and conventional documents that describe how a program achieves its goals and objectives, including meeting the core competencies.

Publishing Case Reports by Fellows
It can be difficult to identify all journals that publish case reports and/or have fellow-specific sections. In an effort to help nephrology fellows and their mentors identify such sources, all nephrology journals were searched based on three criteria: 1) they must be indexed in PubMed; 2) they must publish case reports; and 3) they can also have fellow-specific sections. No other criteria were applied; being on this list does not constitute endorsement of these journals by the ASN. Journals preceded by an asterisks have fellow-specific sections, i.e., sections of the journal that are exclusively devoted to fellow contributions. Finally, please note that nephrology case reports can also be published in internal medicine journals (e.g. New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, JAMA, Archives of Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine and others), however an extensive list of such possible journals is beyond our scope.
