Pratap S. Avasthi

Dr Pratap Avasthi, retired Professor of Nephrology, at the University of New Mexico Medical School, Albuquerque, USA, died on 12th January after a prolonged cardiac ailment. He had qualified as an MBBS and MD (1958) from the King George's Medical College, Lucknow. After carrying out research work at Patel Chest Institute in Delhi, he went to USA in 1965 for further studies. He had worked and trained in nephrology at the Albuquerque between 1966 and 1970. He returned to New Delhi in 1970 and joined the nascent Division of Nephrology as an Assistant Professor at AIIMS. He was one of the founder members of the Indian Society of Nephrology and had participated in its first conference that was held at Mangalore in 1971. He was one of the few senior physicians who had received formal training in nephrology.

Dr. Avasthi had participated in initiating the hemodialysis and renal transplantation programme at AIIMS. He was actively involved in patient care services and teaching of residents. Two years later, he returned to the medical school, Albuquerque and pursued his chief interest of studying renal blood flow by the Doppler method under various conditions including renovascular disorders and renal transplants. His sustained work over several years was widely recognised. He was an outstanding teacher and researcher and received several awards by the University of Albuquerque and the National Kidney Foundation.

He is survived by his wife, three daughters, son in law and two grand children. View obituary »
