Archived Information from Previous Courses

Accreditation and CME Credit Designation

ASN is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

ASN designates this educational activity for a maximum of 70 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

A Prescription for Success

The timing of the ASN Board Review Course & Update (BRCU) in late August maximizes participants' readiness for the ABIM Nephrology Board Certification and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Examinations, November 18, 2009 (also May 11, 2010 for MOC only). After completion of the course and the self-assessment test, participants have nearly three full months to fill in any newly discovered gaps in their knowledge. This course provides a timely, comprehensive, and thorough update for the practicing nephrologist.

Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to 1) apply the acquired knowledge to prepare to pass the 2009 Nephrology Board Certification or MOC Examinations and 2) translate the results of case studies into practical strategies to improve patient care.

Who Should Attend?

Senior Nephrologists: Practicing nephrologists in all key areas of the specialty. The course also benefits pediatric nephrologists, intensivists, and hospitalists.
Board Examination Participants: Individuals are thoroughly prepared for upcoming Certification and MOC exams.
Renal Fellows: Fellows seeking a detailed outline and discussion of what their current fellowship program should include.
Fellowship in ASN: The 70 CME credit hours earned at the BRCU equals the 70 hours per year required to qualify for FASN status.

New Format

Each BRCU topic section and its applicable time allocation are patterned after the ABIM nephrology examination blueprint. Lectures, interactive case discussions, and panel Q&A sessions are integral parts of the 2009 BRCU program. Relevant physiology and pathophysiology are blended with clinical discussions aimed at reviewing, updating, and preparing for the 2009 Board Certification and MOC Examinations.

Participants receive a comprehensive syllabus containing outlines of lectures, explanatory text, copies of key slides, and updated bibliographies. Also included is a color CD ROM of Dr. Helmut Rennke's session "Pathology of Glomerulonephritides."

Final Examination

A practice "Final Examination" is also provided to test participants' knowledge. Answers are entered at the ASN Online CME Center, where the score and the correct answers are shown upon completion of the online exam. The last day to complete the exam online is Monday, November 30, 2009.

Book Publishers

Book publishers are available during the BRCU to offer reference books and study guides (at discounted prices) that may help prepare participants for upcoming Certification and MOC exams.
