Diagnosis and Management of Disorders of Acid-Base, Fluid, and Electrolyte Balance: Challenging Issues for the Clinician

Course Description

Disorders of acid base, fluid, and electrolyte balance are common in seriously ill patients. These disorders can have a dramatic effect on clinical outcomes. Recently, we have developed a better understanding of their pathophysiology; the value and limitations of diagnostic studies; the type and severity of adverse effects; and the most effective methods to manage them. This program provides an up-to-date review of the diagnosis and management of important disorders of acid base, fluid, and electrolyte balance. It highlights the challenges that the practicing physician will often face, as well as emerging new concepts and areas of controversy.

Course Objective(s)

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: 1) apply knowledge of the methods for diagnosis and treatment of lactic acidosis, non-anion gap metabolic acidosis, the metabolic acidosis of chronic kidney disease, metabolic alkalosis, dysnatremias, dyskalemias, resistant edema, and disorders of magnesium, phosphorus, and calcium balance in dialysis patients to generate a systematic approach to the diagnosis and management of these disorders; 2) describe how each of these disorders affects patient morbidity and mortality; 3) discuss the value and limitations of vaptans in treatment of hyponatremia; 4) explain the most appropriate fluids to administer to patients with medical or surgical conditions; and 5) determine gaps in our knowledge and areas of controversy that require further basic and clinical research.
