Critical Care Nephrology: 2017 Update

Course Description

This program is designed for trainees and practicing nephrologists who care for critically ill patients with kidney disease. The first day reviews general topics in critical care medicine that are relevant to the practicing nephrologist. These topics include hemodynamic support and recent updates in the management of sepsis; management of critical illness in the patient with ESRD; ethical issues involved in treating the critically ill; and the management of AKI in specific clinical settings. These settings include treating the patient with cardio-renal syndrome, ventricular assist devices, hepatorenal syndrome or who is in the neurologic ICU. The second day primarily focuses on AKI management in critically ill patients, including patients who are pregnant or have cancer. Additionally, the program covers the short-term and long-term outcomes of AKI and ways to treat patients who recover from AKI. The majority of the afternoon session will focus on treating patients receiving RRT.

Course Objective(s)

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: 1) describe the tools and clinical approaches to the management of septic shock, acute lung injury and critical illness; 2) apply current definitions and staging criteria for AKI; 3) summarize current treatments for patients with AKI in the setting of pregnancy, liver disease, cancer, and cardio-renal syndrome; 4) discuss the long-term risks of chronic kidney disease and ESRD among patients who survive an episode of AKI; and 5) choose among the RRT modalities and select the most appropriate RRT dose for critically ill patients with AKI.
