Kidney Transplantation

In cooperation with the American Society of Transplantation.

Course Description

This program is designed for practicing and trainee transplant nephrologists, practicing general nephrologists, nephrology fellows, and advanced care practitioners who care for kidney transplant recipients. It provides a state-of-the-art review of the evolving field of kidney transplantation, particularly the evaluation and management of patients who are awaiting transplant and appropriate donor selection. Topics include paired kidney donation, ABO, cross-match incompatible transplants, and other novel strategies to maximize rates of organ utilization and kidney transplantation.

In a case-based format with ample time for discussion of controversial management considerations, this program covers optimal immunosuppression strategies that incorporate a more individualized approach with biomarkers and consideration of patient subtypes (e.g., women, children, minorities, multiorgan candidates). It also explores the management of complications such as acute and chronic rejection (both T cell and antibody-mediated), recurrent disease, and opportunistic infections [e.g., BK virus (BKV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV)]. Immunology, tissue typing, and cellular therapies are intertwined in this highly interactive program.

Course Objective(s)

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: 1) describe the evaluation and management of the patient awaiting transplant; 2) discuss current diagnostic and treatment strategies for graft dysfunction; and 3) formulate management guidelines for common complications following transplant.
