Basic/Clinical Science Session

A New Dawn for Diabetic Kidney Disease from Mitochondrial Dynamics

November 17, 2016 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: W179

Session Description

Mitochondria are commonly referred to as the “powerhouse” of the cell. However, they are actively involved in many cellular activities, including signaling, proliferation, and death. This session highlights novel findings on mitochondrial dysfunction as a hallmark in the initiation and progression of diabetic nephropathy.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. describe mitochondrial dynamics; 2. integrate recent developments in mitochondrial dysfunction into the pathophysiology of diabetic nephropathy; and 3. identify therapeutic aspects of targeting mitochondria in glomerular disorders.

Learning Pathways

  • Diabetes and Metabolism
  • Novel Translational Approaches

Moderators

  • Mark E. Cooper, MBBS, PhD, FASN
  • Joel M. Weinberg, MD
