Member Services: Membership Categories

The bylaws define five categories of membership in the Society: Active, Corresponding, Affiliate, Fellow and Emeritus. Active

Any person holding an M.D., Ph.D., or its equivalent, who has demonstrated a major and continuing interest in nephrology, and who is a resident of North or Central America is eligible for active membership. Active members have the right to vote and hold office. The membership fee for Active members is $335, and includes a subscription to the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN), Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN), and Nephrology Self-Assessment Program (NephSAP).

Corresponding

Those who meet the requirements for active membership, but reside outside of North or Central America are eligible for corresponding membership. Corresponding members have the rights of active members except they may not vote or hold office. The membership fee for Corresponding members is $335 and includes a subscription to the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN), Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN), and Nephrology Self-Assessment Program (NephSAP).

Applicants for Active and Corresponding membership must present evidence fulfilling one or more of the following criteria, which will provide guides to the Membership Committee for assessing the eligibility of the candidate.

  • Publication of at least one peer-reviewed paper in the field of nephrology;
  • Successful completion of a research or clinical traineeship in nephrology, specialized training in nephrology during a residency, or other relevant postgraduate education;
  • Experience as a specialist and consultant in kidney disease and related conditions.

Affiliate

Professionals in Nephrology or Allied Fields who are not eligible for Active or Corresponding membership are eligible for Affiliate membership. Affiliate members have the rights of Active members except they may not vote or hold office. The membership fee for Affiliate members is $335 and includes a subscription to the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN), Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN), and Nephrology Self-Assessment Program (NephSAP).

Fellow

Fellows or postdoctoral students residing in North or Central America are eligible for Fellow membership. Fellow members have the rights of active members except they may not vote or hold office. The membership fee for Fellow members is free and includes a subscription to the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN), Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN), and Nephrology Self-Assessment Program (NephSAP).

Retired Emeritus

A senior member who has retired from clinical, teaching and research activities may become an Emeritus member on approval from the Council for free. Emeritus members who wish to receive the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN), Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN), Nephrology Self-Assessment Program (NephSAP) and online services. Emeritus members may not vote or hold office.
