Basic/Clinical Science Session

Kidney in a Dish

November 18, 2016 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: W183A

Session Description

Recent technical advances in stem cells enable the in vitro generation of complex structures resembling whole organs, termed organoids. Most approaches use three-dimensional (3D) culture systems allowing stem cell–derived or tissue progenitor cells to self-organize into a 3D structure. Organoids grown from human stem cells or patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells create significant prospects in the field of regenerative medicine. This session presents some of the most promising approaches in the field of renal organogenesis and regenerative medicine.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. describe the developmental origins of renal progenitors; 2. recognize strategies to generate renal organoids in vitro; and 3. review the challenges to developing a whole functional kidney.

Session Acknowledgements

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, ASN thanks former ASN Councilor Joseph V. Bonventre, MD, PhD, FASN.
