Glomerular Basement Membrane: The Tie that Binds

Session Description

GBM is an integral extracellular matrix component of the glomerular capillary wall; its integrity is required for maintenance of the barrier to albumin. Exactly how GBM regulates the structure and function of the capillary tuft is unknown. This session covers biophysical, compositional, and disease aspects of GBM.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. explain the various hypotheses about how GBM influences glomerular filtration and permselectivity; 2. state the major components of GBM and how they are altered in disease; 3. describe the process of enzymatic cross-linking of type IV collagen; 4. explain how mutations in type IV collagen genes cause Alport syndrome and thin basement membrane nephropathy; and 5. discuss the latest recommendations for treating Alport syndrome and thin basement membrane nephropathy.
