Information about Support in 2010

Overall

The American Society of Nephrology (ASN), the world’s leading kidney organization, works to improve treatment for millions of patients worldwide. ASN fosters evolving research and provides educational opportunities and resources for medical professionals. Support from a variety of organizations augments the society’s efforts to stimulate learning, enhance educational opportunities, and provide grants that advance research in kidney disease.

In 2010, ASN provided $2,403,500 to help fund the research of 32 scientists, including medical students, junior investigators, and established scientists. The society also provided $208,000 to help 260 medical students, residents, fellows, physicians, and scientists travel to attend educational activities.

The total readership for ASN’s four journals in 2010 was 1,457,288, making the society the largest publisher in the kidney disease arena.

ASN’s educational activities included more than 14,000 participants, nearly 900 faculty, and approximately 3,540 abstract (oral and poster) presenters in 2010.

Scientific Exposition

A number of businesses, non-profit societies, and other organizations participate in the ASN annual meeting (Renal Week 2010) as exhibitors. Their participation provides meeting attendees with a venue to evaluate the latest technological, product, and treatment innovations in kidney disease, and their support helps ASN extend the vast array of educational and research opportunities the society provides members of the kidney community. ASN supports the ethical codes of conduct on interactions with health care professionals including, but not limited to, Advanced Medical Technology Association "Code of Ethics on Interaction with Health Care Professionals," the American Medical Association "Gifts to Physicians from Industry Ethical Opinion 8.0611," and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America "Code on Interactions with Healthcare Professionals." ASN provides venues for medical professionals to access the most recent research findings, share information, and translate research results into optimal patient care. ASN also prepares physicians to meet continuing education and certification requirements deemed essential to professional development and the responsible practice of medicine. ASN appreciates the support of other organizations in helping physicians and other professionals better understand disease processes and improve patient care.
