Special Session
Ebola and Dialysis: Resources for Nephrology Health Professionals
November 14, 2014 | 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Hall D
Session Description
The 2014 Ebola epidemic is the largest in history, affecting multiple countries in West Africa. Case reports of infected individuals requiring dialysis have emerged. This session provides the current knowledge on dialytic management of patients with Ebola. Guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the ASN Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) Advisory Group are presented. The role of viral removal through affinity columns with dialysis is discussed. The session concludes with a discussion of the ethical considerations of dialyzing a patient with potential to harm health care providers.
Session Objectives
Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1) discuss considerations in the selection of dialysis modality for Ebola patients in the critical care setting, including patient safety, staff safety, and community safety; 2) describe risks of the virus in hospital or outpatient dialysis units and sensible measures for preventing spread; and 3) discuss ethical considerations in balancing the benefit to a patient versus the risk to health care providers.
