Clinical Nephro-Pharmacology across the Spectrum of Kidney Diseases

Course Description

Knowledge of drug dosing based on pharmacology and pharmacokinetics is fundamentally important to clinicians caring for patients with kidney diseases. Changes in dialysis modalities and knowledge advancements in nephro-pharmacology require clinicians to update their knowledge base and skills in these areas. An improved understanding of nephro-pharmacology, including principles governing drug disposition and response in subjects with kidney diseases, will facilitate optimal use of medications in this tenuous population. This program is designed as a comprehensive review of fundamental issues related to clinical pharmacology in kidney diseases. Learning is stimulated through use of an audience response system. Patient cases and self-assessment questions are diffused throughout the lectures. At the conclusion of this program, nephrologists, pharmacists, nurses, trainees, and those in the pharmaceutical industry gain up-to-date information on drug dosing, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacology in acute and chronic kidney diseases, RRT, and special topics in nephro-pharmacology. The primary target audience would be clinicians and others that are interested in enhancing knowledge and skills in the areas of drug dosing and pharmacology across the spectrum of kidney function.

Course Objective(s)

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: 1. describe and integrate the components of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME), kidney function estimates, dialysis techniques, and drug properties to optimize treatment strategies across the spectrum of kidney diseases; and 2. integrate information from research and clinical cases and apply them to the design of optimal strategies for the treatment of patients with kidney diseases.
