Clinical Practice Session

Bridging the Gap between Evidence and Practice of Peritoneal Dialysis

November 18, 2016 | 04:30 PM - 06:30 PM

Location: W375A

Session Description

The use of PD is increasing in many parts of the world. Despite equivalent survival as achieved with hemodialysis, many patients treated with PD need to transfer to hemodialysis from therapy-related complications. The challenges are greatest during the first year of therapy and often relate to volume management or infectious complications. In this session, experts in the field of PD address and discuss these difficult issues facing PD patients and their physicians.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. recognize the major factors affecting the need for patients to transfer to hemodialysis and how to attenuate their effects; 2. devise a specific plan during the first year of PD to prolong time on therapy; 3. review the mechanism(s) and evidence-based approach to volume management of PD patients; 4. review the pathogenesis, associated comorbidities, and approach to PD patients with hyponatremia; and 5. review a system-wide approach for reducing risk of peritonitis in PD patients.
