Basic/Clinical Science Session

From Not So Simple to Very Complex: Genetic Approaches to Understand Human and Rodent Kidney Diseases

November 19, 2016 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: W190B

Session Description

Innovations in next-generation sequencing and the falling costs of performing large-scale sequencing studies are making projects possible today that just a few years ago seemed impossible, both technically and financially. Integration of genomic information into the workup of individual patients is already beginning to lead to better clinical decisions. The speakers in this session provide examples of how new tools are being used to better understand how organ function is impacted by genetics.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. explain how state-of-the-art methodologies are providing new insights into the basis of human kidney diseases; 2. describe how mice and rats are used to drive genetic studies of organ function; and 3. discuss how hypertension and cardiac health are influenced by genetics in rats.

Learning Pathways

  • Genetic Diseases of the Kidney
  • Chronic Kidney Disease

Moderators

  • Karen A. Griffin, MD, FASN
