Push Me–Pull You: Podocyte Cytoskeleton in Health and Disease

Session Description

Mutations in multiple genes that cause nephrotic syndrome and FSGS have either a direct or an indirect effect on the podocyte cytoskeleton. The establishment and maintenance of the podocyte cytoskeleton are critical for the unique foot process architecture of podocytes. This session focuses on visualizing and understanding the function of proteins that regulate podocyte shape.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. summarize general aspects of the regulation and dynamics of the actin cytoskeleton; 2. explain why the cytoskeleton is so important for podocyte biology and how foot process and cell body cytoskeletons differ; 3. describe how the cytoskeleton can be visualized using novel fixation and staining techniques; 4. explain how different genetic mutations impact the podocyte cytoskeleton; and 5. discuss how the cytoskeleton can be modified to improve glomerular function.
