Basic/Clinical Science Session

Na+-ture K+-alls: New Concepts in Maintenance of Na+ and K+ Homeostasis

November 20, 2016 | 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Location: W175

Session Description

The relationship between dietary sodium and potassium intake, regulation of transporter/channel activity in distal segments of the nephron, and renal contribution to maintenance of homeostasis continues to evolve. This session provides an integrated view of new insights into the renal regulation of sodium and potassium homeostasis.

Honorary Moderator: Gerhard H. Giebisch, MD

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. recognize how dietary intake regulates transporter/channel activity in distal segments of the kidney; 2. distinguish between aldosterone-dependent and independent control of sodium and potassium homeostasis; and 3. recognize circadian patterns of sodium and potassium excretion.

Session Acknowledgements

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, ASN thanks former ASN Councilors Robert W. Berliner, MD, and Gerhard H. Giebisch, MD.
